What it is
The charity directory is your company's list of partners: 501(c)(3) public charities, government bodies such as a city parks department or a school district, and community groups. For each one you record its details, contact person, areas of work and verification status, and then its registrations: its EIN (Employer Identification Number, nine digits, such as 12-3456789), its IRS 501(c)(3) status as shown in the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search (for example "501(c)(3) public charity"), and its state charity registration, with the date it is due for renewal, where the state requires one.
The EIN and 501(c)(3) status matter for tax. On the Giving and tax page, a contribution counts toward your charitable deduction only when the organization has both recorded, or is marked as a government body. Nothing is required and nothing is blocked, but a sponsorship request can only be approved for an organization you have marked verified. CorpHands helps you keep records; it does not check the IRS search for you and is not legal or tax advice.
What you can use it for
- Record each organization's EIN, IRS 501(c)(3) status and state charity registration with its renewal date.
- See each registration's status on the organization's page, including a state registration that has passed or reaches its renewal date within 60 days.
- Store the grant agreement, the latest Form 990 and other documents, each with its own expiry date.
- Choose the organization on an activity or donation, so the payment counts on the Giving and tax page and in the US report pack.
- See the activities and recorded donations for each organization on one page.
- Invite nonprofit staff to the partner portal to confirm attendance, upload photo proof and sign off activities.

Tips and good practice
- Before year end, check that every organization you gave to has its EIN and 501(c)(3) status recorded, or is marked as a government body; the Giving and tax page lists the contributions that don't count yet.
- Check each organization in the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search once a year: an organization can lose its exemption, for example for not filing its Form 990 for three years.
- Organizations created from a sponsorship request start as Pending verification. Check them before approving money.
- A fiscally sponsored project has no EIN of its own: record the sponsoring 501(c)(3) organization as the partner.
- On Starter, the directory holds up to 10 charities, including those added from requests. Business and Enterprise have no limit.
Questions
Does CorpHands check the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search for us?
No. You check the search and record the EIN and status. CorpHands keeps them with the organization's record and uses them to decide which contributions count toward your deduction estimate.
Does CorpHands block donations to an organization without 501(c)(3) status?
No. Community groups and some organizations you support are not 501(c)(3) organizations. CorpHands records what you have; their contributions are listed as records to check on the Giving and tax page.
Why can't we approve a sponsorship request?
The linked organization is not marked verified yet. Check it in the IRS search, update the record and mark it verified.
Can a partner portal user see other organizations?
No. Each partner user belongs to one organization and only sees activities your company runs with it.
